Aberafon Campsite, Caernarfon

After Mur Melyn, we definitely got bitten by the camping bug but really late in the year. So September we decided to try and cram one last good weather camp in together.  My friend Alex spied this little gem, Aberafon located along the A499, north of Pwllheli. We wanted to be as close to the beach as possible for this one and Aberafon is RIGHT ON THE BEACH. OK, it's pretty stoney, but the views when we got there were incredible.

Blink and you'll miss the entrance of the A499, keep your eyes peeled for it. There's a brown camp sign opposite the entrance. The track down is narrow but tarmaced. Watch out for people trying to move caravans around on it. It looks HARD trying to move a caravan along this road. It runs alongside a small stream/brook that meanders through the whole site and out into the bay, looks fun for damming up and playing in if you're camped near to it.

We were told we could pretty much go anywhere we wanted, it was out of season. We needed one pitch with EHU so we managed to get one of them with two normal pitches next to it and then a kids climbing frame next to us too! Ideal for the little-uns. There are two main camping fields and we were on the top one. All over looking an absolutely stunning view of the bay and also a view of the magnificent Gryn Goch behind us. The sun set as we arrived, really making it a magical pitch.

The Quechua 4.2 Family XL  went up in probably under 2 mins. Jeesh I do love this tent, it really is impressive in going up and down. The others have chucked their tents and bought them too now, so we're going to look like a mini Quechua camp next time. :) We set up a gazebo in between two of the tents for the cookers and an undercover area. We've got our eyes on one of those awesome Coleman Event Shelters for next season ;)

We had a toilet block next to us on the field, they were OK, basic, but functioning and pretty much filled to the brim with Daddy Long Legs' (much to Sarah's dismay). The showers cost 20p for a few minutes and the place was cleaned regularly. There's a small shop on site too, but we didn't need it. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer on site too.

The rest of the gang arrived a bit later and some after dark, putting up their tent (recently purchased from Aldi) was a bit of a pain for them, not the greatest tent in the world (but not the worst either). Matt and I ended up hoofing it over to Nefyn to get a load of takeaway food as we'd left it a bit late to cook. It took us ages to get there and in retrospect heading the other way to Caernarfon would of been the better idea as there's a lot more choice and a massive Tesco too.

We got the fire pit going. I don't think you're actually allowed them on this site however, they say they allow off the ground BBQ's but not fires? Lots of people opt for the beach for their fire. I wasn't aware of this until I'd lit the damn thing, but nothing was said. I still don't quite understand why BBQ's are OK and fires not? (Let me know in the comments or on Facebook!)

The next day the gang were treated to the extensive views and we all hit the beach to build a fire and cook bacon butties on. We're really into having bacon, avocado and Franks Hot Sauce on them at the moment. Try it! We spent the whole time on-site, playing frisbee and letting the kids roam around. The top field also sits adjacent to a hillside which has a llama and two goats in too, the kids loved feeding them grass. Toilet block has washing up facilities, so we washed up after an awesome BBQ and a bit of a sunset.

We absolutely loved this place. It's super simple, good sized pitch, right on the beach with amazing views and the sound of the sea. Nothing to not like really. I can't wait to revisit, I bet it's pretty full in peak season. It deserves to be.
